The Boys From Brazil, Genetic Tampering Gone Wild!

There are going to be spoilers in this post. If you have never seen this film and want to be surprised by it then stop reading right now. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

The Boys From Brazil is a twisted film giving us a glimpse into a future in which giant strides in genetics have taken place that lets the surviving Nazi elite recreate the circumstances in which Adolph Hitler was created. This film was made over thirty years ago, so technology has caught up with the ideas set forth in this book, but that doesn’t make the idea of new little Hitlers being created any less frightening.

This film is based upon the book of the same name by Ira Levin, who also wrote Rosemary’s Baby. What I find really interesting about the idea behind the film’s premise is that it realized it’s not only genetics that paves the way for a person to become evil and twisted. Joseph Mengele, played by Gregory Peck, artificially inseminates a bunch of ‘Aryan’ women with the genetic material of Hitler. Then these babies are adopted out to couples who fit the exact profile of Hitler’s parents. The wife is younger and domineering, while the husband is older and works for the civil service. Once this is done the plan is then to have all of the fathers killed at the same age as Hitler’s father died.

He's mad as hell and he's not going to take it any more!

He’s mad as hell and he’s not going to take it any more!

What’s funny is that these surviving Nazi leaders have a real problem with killing these fathers and the consequences of this is their plan is found out. Sure, they have no problems killing millions of people in concentration camps, but they are now more cautious and realize that perhaps the world isn’t totally in synch with their crazy ideas yet. Mengele is the only character that is fanatical about this plan, so much so that he gets into a physical confrontation at a party with another Nazi who criticizes his ideas. He is convinced that if the murders don’t happen then their dream of a Fourth Reich will never take place. The character has a point, in which that certain events in our lives shape us and change our personality. If Hitler’s father hadn’t died while he was young would he have been a different person?

Modern day Hitler.

Modern day Hitler.

The part of this film that genuinely freaks me out is the character of a young teen modern day Hitler. These clones appear in various times throughout the film while Nazi hunter Yakov Liebermann is seeking out the families that adopted these children. Liebermann doesn’t quite know exactly what is going on but as he meets these identical children who live in totally different areas he quickly figures out that something really strange and disquieting is happening. Even though these young Hitlers have never met each other they are all slightly bratty and act like they are superior to the people surrounding them. Their environmental conditioning seems to be working!

Cloning of animals is being done today but there have been laws put in place to stop doing the same things with humans. Does that mean that nobody is doing such things? Right now there are labs out there tampering with the genetic code hoping to create humans that are ‘perfect’. How long will it be before these type of creatures are cloned?

Smallpox Vials Found In A Storage Room?

This doesn't look like fun!

This doesn’t look like fun!

Recently employees who were transferring lab equipment from one place to another discovered six vials of the smallpox virus dating back to 1954. If that isn’t worrying enough testing has come to the conclusion that two of those vials still contain the active virus. That’s right, there were vials of the active smallpox virus just sitting in an unused storage room for about 60 years.

Smallpox is an awful disease. The most common form of it, Variola Major, killed 30% of those who caught it and quite frequently it permanently disfigured those who survived. First you would have flu like symptoms, and once you started to feel like you were getting better you started breaking out in bumps all over your body. The bumps would start filling with fluid, grow and then burst. Those who got them near the eyes were at risk of going blind. Sounds like fun, eh? As somebody who has had chickenpox I can’t imagine having something even worse than that.

What else do they have hiding out in old disused storerooms? Anthrax maybe?

The good news? Smallpox was eradicated worldwide in 1980 and there have been no reported natural cases of it reported since then. However, there are labs who actually keep the live virus for experimentation purposes. Personally, I’m not buying that. I think the US and Russia only keep it in order to weaponize it in case WW3 starts and they feel like getting rid of a good portion of a population. Considering how fragmented the late Soviet Union became it’s pretty likely that they are yet more vials of smallpox floating about out there somewhere.

Our Friend The Ebola Virus

This little guy only wants a hug.

This little guy only wants a hug.

I’ve always had an interest in the Black Death and other such plagues, which at various times have attempted to wipe out the human race. I feel that it is nature’s way of thinning out the herd a bit. Do I sound like a cold hearted person, do I not feel any compassion for those who catch a plague and die? Of course I do, however humans themselves have been a plague upon the planet so in the end it’s only fair. If the Black Death hadn’t wiped out half of Europe how overpopulated would the planet be now? Yeah, think on that for a bit before you get angry at me.

About a month or so ago I began to see reports online about a new outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa. These sort of events have happened over the years but not to the extant that it is happening now. Usually it’s contained in a small area, but this time it is in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, with a record number of 66 reported spots of outbreak. Even more concerning is the fact this particular outbreak has killed over 60% of the people who have caught it. That’s right, if this little puppy spreads there will be an even higher death toll than when the Black Death hit.

It wasn’t until this week that I started to see news reports on the major new sites about this newest event. Since it’s happening in Africa I’m betting that they didn’t think anybody would give a crap. I mean, who cares about non white people dying, right? It’s kind of like the missing blonde white girl syndrome. You know, when a white blonde girl, or woman, goes missing it gets twice the attention than any other case of a missing person. We all know that is true so don’t even start denying it.

Why should the average person care about this particular outbreak? This one has spread further than any other Ebola outbreak and has spread more quickly. This is due to people leaving their area when symptoms occur and going to a new one. It is NOT an airborne type virus, you can only get it by infected body fluids coming into contact with your body fluids. A small cut would be all it would take to get infected. One reason why Africa is particularly vulnerable to it is because of the common death ritual of caring for a relative’s body after they die. If the relative was infected when they died you will more than likely get it if you prepare their body.

Now, for the record, many are saying they it will never leave Africa. I highly doubt that. Considering how easy it is to jump on a plane and go to the other side of the world I have no problem saying that I think it could. It can take up to 3 weeks to show the symptoms of the virus and during that time a person can go on a plane, leave there body fluids on a highly touched surface and somebody else can get it by transfer.

Have I forgotten to mention the symptoms and what happens to you when you catch it? How dare I be remiss! This is taken right from the CDC website:

Symptoms of Ebola HF typically include:

Fever
Headache
Joint and muscle aches
Weakness
Diarrhea
Vomiting
Stomach pain
Lack of appetite

Some patients may experience:

A Rash
Red Eyes
Hiccups
Cough
Sore throat
Chest pain
Difficulty breathing
Difficulty swallowing
Bleeding inside and outside of the body

The bleeding from the body bit is what really gets me. People, towards the end, start bleeding out of every orifice, because their organs are liquifying. Yep, you are decomposing while you are still alive! That has got to be one of the most gruesome things ever! I think the Black Death may be a bit jealous when it comes to that part, all it did was cause swelling and make your face turn black! Well, not exactly, but you get what I’m saying!
